Shri Gagangiri Maharaj, born as Shripad Patankar, entered this world in Manadure Village, Patan, Satara district of Maharashtra. His journey towards spiritual enlightenment commenced at the tender age of seven when he left his home and ventured to a Nath Sampradaya Matha located in the relatively obscure locale of Battees-Shirala. It was here that he embarked on the path of Sannyasa, embracing a life of renunciation and spiritual devotion.

A Saint's Extraordinary Journey

Shri Gagangiri Maharaj belonged to the Chalukanath Dynasty, a lineage of warriors. However, at the age of eight, he embarked on a journey of self-realization, forsaking his warrior heritage. His initial Sadhana unfolded in Uttar Kashi, later leading him to the Himalayas for Tapa, a profound form of spiritual asceticism. He stands as the only saint to have completed the Sadhana of three Tapa, a testament to his unwavering dedication and spiritual mastery. Recognizing his exceptional contributions, the Parliament of the World’s Religions honored him with the prestigious “Vishwagaurav Vibhushan” award.

A Divine Transition

On the morning of February 4th, 2008, at 3:30 am, Shri Gagangiri Maharaj peacefully took Samadhi at Khopoli Ashram. At the time of his passing, he had reached the remarkable age of 101, leaving behind a legacy of profound spiritual teachings and a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals.
